Explore Military Service

Military service can provide opportunities for education, technical training, leadership development, career preparation, and service to the community. Students should carefully research each branch and discuss their goals with a school counselor, family members, and an official military representative.

Military Branches

Students may explore opportunities in:

Army
Marine Corps

Air Force
Space Force
Coast Guard

Each branch offers different career fields, training programs, service commitments, and benefits.

Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC)

JROTC can help students develop leadership, discipline, teamwork, citizenship, and decision-making skills. Participation does not require students to enlist in the military. JROTC coursework may also support a Public Service endorsement, depending on the student’s graduation plan and district requirements.

Enlistment and Career Exploration

Students considering enlistment typically:

Meet with an authorized recruiter
Review eligibility requirements
Take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), when required
Compare military occupational specialties and training opportunities
Review service obligations, benefits, and education options
Discuss medical, academic, and physical requirements

Students should avoid signing documents or making commitments until they understand the terms and have had an opportunity to ask questions.

ASVAB Career Exploration Program — Learn about careers and interests
U.S. Military Academy at West Point — Army's premier officer academy in New York. Full scholarship including tuition, room, board, and stipend.
U.S. Naval Academy — Navy and Marine Corps officer academy in Annapolis, Maryland. All costs covered with monthly stipend.
U.S. Air Force Academy — Air Force officer academy in Colorado Springs. Full scholarship including tuition, room, board, and stipend.
U.S. Coast Guard Academy — Coast Guard officer academy in Connecticut. Fully funded with no tuition costs and monthly stipend.
Military ROTC Programs — Officer training at colleges nationwide. Scholarships available for tuition, fees, and books.
