College-Readiness and Admissions Tests

Testing can support course placement, college admission, scholarship applications, and graduation planning. Students should discuss testing timelines with their counselor and confirm current requirements with each college or program.

PSAT/NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT helps students practice for the SAT, explore college and career opportunities, and potentially qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It is generally taken during the sophomore or junior year.

SAT and ACT

The SAT and ACT are college-admission tests accepted by many colleges and universities. Students should check each institution’s current testing policy and plan to test early enough to meet application and scholarship deadlines.

TSIA2

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 helps determine whether a student is ready for entry-level college coursework in mathematics and English Language Arts and Reading. Colleges may use TSIA2 results for course placement and advising.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

AP exams assess college-level coursework completed in high school. Depending on the institution and score, students may receive college credit or placement.

End-of-Course Exams

Texas graduation requirements include passing the required STAAR End-of-Course exams:

  • English I
  • English II
  • Algebra I
  • Biology
  • U.S. History

Students who need support should speak with their teachers and counselor about tutoring, retesting, and available instructional resources.
