Advanced Academics
Pasadena High School offers a wide range of advanced academic opportunities designed to challenge students, accelerate learning, and prepare them for college and competitive careers. Through programs such as Advanced Placement, Gifted and Talented services, collegiate-level preparation, and academic competitions, students are encouraged to pursue rigorous coursework, develop critical thinking skills, and demonstrate academic excellence. These programs provide multiple pathways for students to earn college credit, gain recognition, and engage in meaningful academic enrichment beyond the traditional classroom.
-
Advanced Placement (AP) & Pre-AP
The Advanced Placement program allows students to take college-level courses while still in high school, with the opportunity to earn college credit based on AP exam performance. Pre-AP courses prepare students for the rigor of AP classes by building advanced academic skills. Students benefit from increased readiness for college, potential tuition savings, and stronger college applications through participation in the most rigorous coursework available.
-
Gifted and Talented (GT)
The GT program identifies and supports students with exceptional academic potential by providing accelerated and enriched learning experiences. Students develop advanced skills in research, creativity, and problem-solving, often through Honors, AP, and specialized courses. Identification is ongoing, and students may be referred by teachers, parents, or through self-nomination.
-
Collegiate Scholars Program
This invitation-only program supports high-achieving students working toward recognition such as National Merit Scholar status. Eligible students—typically those scoring in the top 5% on the PSAT—participate in structured academic activities including tutoring, test preparation, and enrichment opportunities. Successful completion is recognized with a distinction at graduation.
-
Dual Credit & College Readiness Assessments
Students have opportunities to earn college credit through dual credit coursework and prepare for post-secondary success through assessments such as the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. These experiences help students build college readiness skills and strengthen their academic and career pathways.
-
Accelerations & Credit by Examination (CBE)
Students may advance in their academic journey by earning credit through examinations for courses they have not taken. With qualifying scores, students can accelerate grade levels or receive course credit, allowing for more flexible and personalized academic pathways.
-
Academic Competitions & Enrichment Opportunities
Students can extend their learning beyond the classroom by participating in programs such as Academic Decathlon, chess, spelling bee competitions, and other academic events. These opportunities promote teamwork, critical thinking, and academic excellence while allowing students to apply their knowledge in competitive and collaborative environments.
