Dobie High School’s Thespian Troupe, 1790, received an honorable mention for costume and scenic design during the Texas Thespian State Festival.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held virtually this year back in December.

The team competed in the festival’s Team Design Challenge and walked away as one of six recognized in a pool of over 8,000 participants.

Two Dobie teams entered the team challenge, with only three weeks to complete their plans and designs, which were based on the musical, “Wicked.”

Each team had the opportunity to collaborate and complete their concept for the following design elements:

Scenic Design – “Outside the Gates of Emerald City”
Costume Design – “Fiyero Turned Scarecrow”
Hair/Make-Up Design – “Chistery, the first flying monkey”
Properties Design – “Ancient Book of Spalls – The Grimmerie”

Once completed, the teams had to submit a slide show containing pictorial references of their work for the judges.

“Dobie Theatre department strives for excellence and it shows. Our students know that success demands dedication and hard work. We are extremely proud of our tech theatre students and their accomplishments at their first statewide competition.” — Juliet Rogers, Dobie Theatre department head
